SONY:Soon a super cassette capable of storing 185 terabytes of data !

Sony abandoned the cassette holder in 2010. Yet when Intermag Europe conference taking place this week in Germany, the brand has unveiled a new type of tape that might give a second life to the support ...

That will appeal to nostalgic! Sony has announced that the group was working on a new type of magnetic tape capable of storing up to 185 terabytes of data, equivalent to 3,700 Blu-Ray!

A cassette 2.0

Unveiled during the Intermag Europe conference being held this week in Dresden, Germany, the cassette is based on the sputtering deposition technology. This is ask magnetic nano-crystal layers on the tape. As these nanocrystals have a reduced size, they facilitate the accumulation of particles and therefore provide better storage density.
Sony has announced that the group would present these results in conjunction with IBM, who have participated in the development of this technology. No wonder, in 2012 IBM and Fujifilm worked together on a new type of tape can store data 35To.

A missing support, or almost ...

The tape was invented by Philips in 1963 but knows its hour of glory at the arrival of the Sony Walkman in the 1980s decade, about 442 million copies have been sold. The arrival of the compact disc cassette finally relegated to the background until the MP3 gives him the coup de grace and that it is forgotten, almost. Although they are no longer used by the general public, cassettes are still used by professionals to servers and databases. Indeed, they are stronger and durable than optical discs while being less expensive. The lifetime of a cassette is approximately fifty years against several years for a CD. The professionals however are not the only ones using this medium. Some independent music labels have never even stopped using it because of its low production cost. Unfortunately, we still do not know if Sony will market one day his cassette 2.0. However it is clear that this innovation could give a boost to the cassette holder. Sony Will book this media professionals? Does the general public will be able to replace their old hard drives? To find out, it will take his troubles patiently for a while.
