"Super Mario", the little plumber became a global icon of the video game, celebrated his 30th birthday Sunday, celebrated by his publisher, the giant Nintendo, with the release of a new album using the creativity of the players.
Blue overalls, red hat and mustache: Mario is identifiable at first glance, including beginners. An unusual fame in the video game which can not boast some personages like the adventuress Lara Croft, Sonic hedgehog and the yellow ball Pac-Man.
"Today, Mario is an equivalent character Mickey Mouse in popular culture. And it is destined to last because we found that it is often the parents who discover their children", told AFP Florent Gorges , co-founder of the publishing house Pix'n Love specializing in the video game and author of a "History of Nintendo."
First a minor character
Before the first "Super Mario Bros", published September 13, 1985 in Japan on the Famicom, the mustachioed hero had already made an appearance in 1981 in another title from Nintendo, "Donkey Kong" under the name "Jumpman" .
It was not until 1985 that inherits the name of Mario, in reference to the owner of a warehouse leased by the American branch of Nintendo whose physique was reminiscent of a character from the video game. "As I had just thought of an Italian by drawing the character, I decided to (a) appoint Mario officially," said its creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
But why did he wear a cap?
His physical mat, Mario owes in part to technological constraints of the 1980s, with a limited number of pixels and colors used. "I drew him a big nose and a mustache for the players to see his face."
"Mario was wearing a blue shirt and red overalls for the movements of his arms are clearly visible," says Mr. Miyamoto in an interview broadcast by Nintendo. As for the presence of a cap, it is due to the fact that it was impossible to move her hair despite his movements.
310 million copies
For 30 years, the games belonging to the Mario universe have sold over 310 million copies. Besides his most famous adventure where he must rescue Princess Peach jumping obstacles and fighting turtles, the plumber has shown in various fields such as football, golf or kart racing.
These productions have often managed to stand by the technological breakthrough that accompanied them, as the arrival of a fully three-dimensional world with "Super Mario 64" in 1996. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his saga, Nintendo opts creation by marketing "Super Mario Maker" on the WiiU console.
A sequel to appeal to the imagination of players
In addition to challenges designed by developers, this game allows to imagine worlds where the little plumber can walk but also to browse the worlds offered by other players by connecting to the Internet. To avoid outlandish creations, the Japanese group has nonetheless provided safeguards.
"The creation of elements gradually unblocked to accompany the player. And a level can be brought online only if its creator was able to complete the" notes Anne-Marie Baufine-Ducrocq, marketing director of Nintendo France. And to be sure to touch all generations, the game features four graphic styles from "Super Mario Bros" in 1985 to "New Super Mario Bros. U" appeared in 2012.
