The American Gartner, known for its annual curve of high-tech trends, today presents a new study on the market for 3D printing.
According to its latest forecast, the number of 3D printers sold for 2016 should approach the symbolic half a million units, an increase of almost 103% compared to 2015.
Specifically, the 3D printer sales are expected to increase from 244,533 in 2015 printers sold 496,475 units for 2016. Gartner teams also argue that this number is expected to double annually to exceed 5.6 million by 2019.
"Increased quality and innovations in performance on all 3D printing technologies ranges led demand from businesses and the general public, with shipping rates very sharply," comments Pete Basiliere, Vice President of Research at Gartner. "The 3D printer market continues its transformation from a niche market to a vast, global market of professionals and individuals. "
Divided into 7 large families of processes, the market for 3D printing should be primarily driven by the filament deposition technology, upon which the MakerBot 3D printers or Ultimaker example. This technology, which will represent in 2015 a total of 232,336 machines sold, could rise by 2019 to 5,527,493 units shipped worldwide. The FDM technology (Fused Deposition Modeling for) and account for 97.5% of the market, a share that can be explained by its low price and a grip to everyone.
The study also reveals that the main interest in 3D printers "general public", ie machines sold under the 2500 dollar mark, are not necessarily individuals but more universities and schools.
